To vote in a primary election voters must declare a party affiliation (Democrat or Republican). May 23 is the last day to pre-register to vote.

Absentee voting is available by mailing a request to the county auditor’s office at the courthouse, 114 N. Chestnut, Jefferson, IA 50129, or in person during regular business hours. The auditor’s office will also be open Saturday, May 31, from 9 am to 5 pm for absentee voting.

Polls will be open June 3 from 7 am to 9 pm. Voters in the Jefferson 2 precinct should note a change in location to the Trinity Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. That change is due to construction at Greene County Medical Center.

The only race on the Democratic ballot is for state representative in District 47. Hans Erickson and Mark J. Trueblood are both seeking the party’s nomination.

The US Senate race tops the Republican ballot with Sam Clovis, Joni Ernst, Mark Jacobs, Scott Schaben and Matt Whitaker all seeking the nomination for the seat vacated by the retirement of long-time senator Tom Harkin.

Gov Terry Branstad is being challenged in his re-election bid by fellow Republican Tom Hoefling.

On the Greene County ballot, Phyllis Drake and Kristi Holz are both seeking the nomination for county treasurer.
